It is with great sadness that Scottish Touch reports the passing of our former President,
David Matthew, on 20 April. He was 79. David was diagnosed with an advanced and
aggressive squamous cell carcinoma and things went very quickly. He passed away
peacefully with his wife, children and grandchildren close by.

David became Scottish Touch President in December 2012, using his experience in
management to steer the STA toward a more professional approach and laying the
foundation that has helped it successfully support hundreds of players, officials and
volunteers since he stepped down in 2016. As well as running a number of tournaments,
David managed Referee teams at several national and international events, providing a
reassuring base for everyone in his crew to go out and give their best.

Our thoughts are with family and friends, in particular James and Anna Matthew who
refereed and played at the highest level of the sport. With that in mind, we want to leave
the last words in this message from James:

“Dad was very proud of the STA, the volunteers, players, referees and committee. He was a
humble gentleman who was honoured to play a small part in its development.

“His body may have stopped but his spirit and mind live on in those he spent time with.”
